When my first video was recorded, it was solely for the purpose of being used as an aid in my private practice. The 2+ hours I spent teaching every patient the principles of heathy eating was the same talk day after day month after month. It seemed like a huge waste of time to repeat this required diet education hundreds of time each year.
I decided to have the first part of my multi week course, the segment on healthy eating, video taped. I would then make copies and loan them out to new patients who had made their initial consultation appointment and were waiting the 2-3 months to get in to see me. At the end of the video taping session, dozens of the hundred or so students in my class wanted to know when the videos would be available for purchase. My explanation that the video recording was only to be an aid for my private practice, and not a product for sale DID NOT go over very well! Everyone explained that the video would enable them to give gifts of my important teachings to friends and relatives around the country who would never be able to attend my San Diego classes.
This particular course was being taught, at the time, in the main auditorium of Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa California every semester. I had never thought about selling the final product but my student’s comments made me change my mind and the VHS tapes finally became available, after a great deal of editing problems.
Meanwhile, the very next semester, my professional videographer from San Diego State University came to take the entire course. He said that he had learned so much valuable information in the hours he had previously taped, that he wanted to learn more and so had signed up for the course. At the end of the eating class for this next semester, he approached me and said I should hire him to tape the entire rest of the course, add it to the previous healthy eating video, and make my whole course available for sale. My response was pretty quick. I told him that I could never afford to pay him for that much taping and editing time for all the additional classes of my course.
I never could have guessed what his answer was going to be. He said, “look, I’m going to be here every Tuesday evening for your class anyway, since I’m taking your entire course. It doesn’t really make a difference to me if I watch you from my chair or through the lens of my professional video camera, so here’s my offer. I tape all of the rest of your classes for this course, and I will charge you the same price to do the entire rest of this course, as I charged you for just the eating healthy class last semester”. He was offering to tape and edit about 500% more time for only 100% more money. He said the information was so important, that it would sort of be like his donation towards getting it available to the public.
Wow, I couldn’t possibly say no, I would have been a fool. So, although we had some more editing problems, and Rudy did not get me the final product for over 18 months, it did get completed and has been selling ever since. We sold both the entire six box set or just the eating porting only, which was box number one. DVD’s had not yet been invented and so the videos were all in VHS format which were later converted to DVD’s.
A few years later, students and patients began to suggest that I do specific topics, and since I had always wanted to do this anyway, I started to produce them as new educational DVD’s on numerous important topics in the health and medicine field.
A couple of years ago, the Price-Pottenger nutrition Foundation informed me that many of their members and non members had been calling and emailing. They said that so many hours of video watching was VERY difficult to do. It took up TV time or computer time and you had to be home to do it. They wanted to know if I would consider transcribing the six box VHS course’s audio onto CD’s so that they could listen and learn while driving. It seemed like a good idea but I needed to get certain permissions. In class, I show some video tapes and I had received permission from the copyright holders to include them on my VHS and then DVD recordings. I received permission once again for putting the audio tracks onto the CD, and I professionally and digitally recorded my next entire course from beginning to end. This course, now on CD, was actually a longer course (two more days) and contains even more information.
My course has continually increased in length over the years as I have added more and more information and the college has let me put in more hours to teach. 16 years ago it began as a five session course with only 1 ½ hours per meeting. Currently, in 2009 it has grown to an eight week course meeting for 2 hours 40 minutes each class for a brand new total length of 24 hours! Maybe in a few years I’ll tape it once again, but the production is quite costly to do it right.
Duane, my audio editor, insisted that he needed to “track” the CD recordings so that people could skip ahead and back while listening. I also needed to get an artist to make up the cover and CD face prints that are called STOMPS. It took 14 full length CD’s to hold the 17 hours of my lectures but we completed it and put them up for sale. I get more thank yous and comments from those who have purchased this set, than any other recording I have made, since you are learning everything that a student in my course would have learned.
The greatest problem was cost. Most of the public does not realize that DVD’s and CD’s cost about the same to produce and duplicate when done in quantity. It was VERY expensive to make a 14 CD set and now in 2009, that I have insisted on adding a computer CD filled with printable PDF documents, it costs even more. If I wanted to make a similar profit on these sets, I would need to sell them for at least $300.00 and people might not be able to afford them. This, even though I knew that the knowledge and health improvements people will learn, can easily pay them back 20 to 100 times that amount or maybe even save their life. I decided to make the lowest profit margin I could, and sell the set for $175.00 and when I recently added the 15th CD with printable reference material, I did not raise the price. So, as Paul Harvey has said so many times on the radio, now you know The Rest of the Story.
