What is TANSTAAFL

A few decades ago when I was still working as an electrical design engineer, I was introduced to a company we had not been purchasing from before. They sold various brands of the special types of ceramic and Teflon insulated wire that we used in the manufacturing of infra-red heat shrink tunnels and control systems.

After utilizing their sales staff for a few months, I quickly and happily discovered that they took exceptional pride in giving great service. My salesman called me back more quickly than every other similar supplier. They ALWAYS called back on time, as they had promised, even if it was to tell me that they did not have my answers yet and were still working on my quote, or locating the wire I needed.

After a few months of getting used to their fabulous customer service, I asked my sales rep if their was some meaning to their name, which was TANSTAAFL Electric Cable. He told me that their company had been founded on the principle that if you want something good, you have to work for it. That good things (like profits and repeat customers) do not come along by themselves but rather they are acquired or gained by salespeople who work hard to satisfy the customer. That you have to make things happen if you want them to hapen and so the owner had used a very old saying and made it into the acronym TANSTAAFL which stood for There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

This is truly a very old saying which I heard when I was a child, and knew well, but which I had not heard recently as an adult. Now that I will spend the rest of my life learning new and exciting pieces of health information and ways to help others improve their health, I have decided that this old saying, and the acronym that the wire company turned it into, is a VERY appropriate way to look getting healthier. Improving your health needs the same amount of effort on your part and if you want lots of improvements you had beter be willing to give lots of effort.

So now you know the story of TANSTAAFL. I fully understand, rather sadly, that most of the public is in fact NOT willing to make these efforts. That people believe that it is the physicians job to get them well, even though this is most often impossible. Few even know that in olden days,in traditional Chinese culture, the physician was only paid while the person remained healthy, for if they became ill, it meant that the physician had not done his job correctly. So here we are in the 21st century. The U.S. spends inordinately more money per person on health care (disease care since health does not require care) than any other country and yet the last World Health Organization listing had us in 37th place. Very sad indeed and a great indication that we continue to suppress symptoms rather than causes and rarely if ever improve anyone's health.

My entire goal as I continue to produce educational DVD's and CD's (or whatever new formats come along in the future) is to give the viewer the tools, if they should decide to use any of them, to work on improving their health and the health of their family.
